*Yule*

Tomorrow is yule!

so yule for those who don't know. The date varies from December 20 to December 23 depending on the year in the Gregorian calendar. Yule is also known as the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere due to the seasonal differences.
So for me its the winter solstice.

Yule, is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day. Known as Solstice Night, or the longest night of the year, the sun's "rebirth" is celebrated with much joy. On this night, we celebrate the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, the Giver of Life that warms the frozen Earth. From this day forward, the days become longer.

Bonfires are lit in the fields. Children were escorted from house to house with gifts of clove spiked apples and oranges which were laid in baskets of evergreen boughs and wheat stalks dusted with flour. The apples and oranges represented the sun. The boughs were symbolic of immortality (evergreens were sacred to the Celts because they did not "die" thereby representing the eternal aspect of the Divine). The wheat stalks portrayed the harvest, and the flour was accomplishment of triumph, light, and life. Holly and ivy not only decorate the outside, but also the inside of homes, in hopes Nature Sprites will come and join the celebration. A sprig of Holly is kept near the door all year long as a constant invitation for good fortune to visit the residents. Mistletoe is also hung as decoration. It represents the seed of the Divine, and at Midwinter, the Druids would travel deep into the forest to harvest it.

The ceremonial Yule log is the highlight of the Solstice festival. In accordance to tradition, the log must either have been harvested from the householder's land, or given as a gift... it must never have been bought. Once dragged into the house and placed in the fireplace it was decorated in seasonal greenery, doused with cider or ale, and dusted with flour before set ablaze by a piece of last years log, (held onto for just this purpose). The log would burn throughout the night, then smolder for 12 days after before being ceremonially put out. Ash is the traditional wood of the Yule log. It is the sacred world tree of the Teutons, known as Yggdrasil. An herb of the Sun, Ash brings light into the hearth at the Solstice.

A different type of Yule log, and perhaps one more suitable for modern practitioners would be the type that is used as a base to hold three candles. Find a smaller branch of oak or pine, and flatten one side so it sets upright. Drill three holes in the top side to hold red, green, and white (season), green, gold, and black (the Sun God), or white, red, and black (the Great Goddess). Continue to decorate with greenery, red and gold bows, rosebuds, cloves, and dust with flour.

Many customs created around Yule are identified with Christmas today. If you decorate your home with a Yule tree, holly or candles, you are following some of these old traditions. The Yule log, (usually made from a piece of wood saved from the previous year) is burned in the fire to symbolize the Newborn Sun/Son.

Witchcraft & Rituals make for good headlines.

Right i am beyond outraged with an article i read by the sun. I will post the link to the article and i will post the comment i left for it. Which was not approved to be shown on the sight how bias is that ?

www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/scottishnews/4656093/Pagans-naked-love-ritual-with-girl-15.html <-- the article

My comment they didn't post.
I am wiccan, and i am personally outraged with this article. To start with i have never seen an article so bias and this being the sun thats really saying something. I would never read other religions being talked about this way, its disgusting & disrespectful. One mans actions should not define a religion. As if we don't have enough stereotypes and haters to worry about the media now decides to join in, i am sure witchcraft and rituals makes for good headlines, does not mean they are true or show any insight into the actual religion. Yes some covens and rituals prefer if all members are willing to practice naked. It should never be without consent and most covens will have an age restriction. No coven or pagan would force someone into anything they don't want to. I do not agree with the actions of the individual, but i do not think you should slander a peaceful religion because of those actions.

The charge of the goddess

This is a topic that I has recently been in discussion among the Wiccan and pagan community group that I am apart of, so I thought I would relay my information/thoughts on it.

The charge of the goddess, is the closest we have to a sacred text.
It was originally written by Doreen Valiente, as with most texts it has been adapted as time goes on. Which I am perfectly happy with, it's a natural thing as text is passed on. This is some thing most of us will use in practice or study a lot, not saying all of us do as each path is different.

The version that is given here is from "The Witches' Bible " by Janet and Stewart Farrar.

The Charge of the Goddess
Listen to the words of the Great Mother, She who of Old was also Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Dana, Arianhod, Isis, Bridgit, and by many other names.
Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the Moon is full, then ye shall assemble in some secret place and adore the Spirit of Me,Who is Queen of all Witches. There shall ye assemble all ye who would feign to learn all sorcery, yet have not as yet won it's deepest secrets, so these I will teach ye things that are yet unknown. And ye shall be free from all slavery, and as a sign that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites. And ye shall sing, feast, dance, make music and make love all in My praise. For Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine is also joy on Earth, for My law is love unto all beings. Keep pure your highest ideals, strive ever towards them, and let naught stop you or turn you aside. For Mine is the secret door which opens upon the land of Youth, and Mine is the cup of the Wine of Life, and the cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of Immortality. I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the hearts of Man. Upon Earth I give knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold I am the Mother of all living things, and My love is poured out upon the Earth.
Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess, the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, and whose body encircleth the Universe.
I who am the beauty of the green Earth, and the White Moon among the stars, and the mysteries of the waters, and the desire in the hearts of man, call unto thy soul. Arise and come unto Me, for I am the Soul of Nature, who giveth life unto the Universe. From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return. And before My face, beloved of Gods and of men let thine innermost divine self be enfolded in the rapture of infinite. Let My worship be within the heart that rejoiceth, for behold all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honer and humility, mirth and reverence within you. And you who thinkest to seek for Me, know thy seeking and yearning shall avail you not unless you knowest the mystery, that if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee, thou wilt never find it without of thee. For behold I have been with thee from the very beginning and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

(i will post this extract on the knowledge tree page after this post so its always easy to find :D )

Now a breakdown of the charge, this will be how I see it, you may interpret it differently.
  okay so
"Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the Moon is full, then ye shall assemble in some secret place and adore the Spirit of Me,Who is Queen of all Witches. There shall ye assemble all ye who would feign to learn all sorcery, yet have not as yet won it's deepest secrets, so these I will teach ye things that are yet unknown".
basically that once a month preferably on a full moon you should go somewhere unknown to everyone else with your coven or solitary to seek answers, pray, practise magick, meditate ect. But most importantly to worship the goddess. Through this she will help guide you.

"ye shall sing, feast, dance, make music and make love all in My praise. I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the hearts of Man"

Sing, dance, eat , make love & music to honour the goddess, for she is the one who brings joy on earth, because she loves everyone that she wants happiness & joy to be shared and celebrated. Keep your passions & goals pure, good & stick to them, don't be led astray. For the goddess is the joy and life upon earth she is the one who brings us happiness.

Upon Earth I give knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold I am the Mother of all living things, and My love is poured out upon the Earth
The goddess gives us our spirit and after death she gives us peace, freedom and reunites us with our lost ones. She never demands sacrifice because she's the mother of all living things.

Let My worship be within the heart that rejoiceth, for behold all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

When following this path make sure you are happy for the goddess strives for acts of love, to be wiccan is to be strong, compassionate, beautiful, to show honour and humility.

That is my basic breakdown of the charge of the goddess, although it is pretty easy to understand.

Love and light to you all! Blessed be, merry ye meet and merry ye part!

Samhain again!

Yes that's right another Samhain post, i did warn you i love Samhain  It's so close now, whats everyone got planned? a big get together? or solitary celebrations ?
I have found this very warming chant on YouTube  and no it is not my video. I liked it and thought i'd share with you. Blessed be all and merry ye meet :)

Chant     <-- click here for link to YouTube!

Another quick thing i am going to touch upon now then revisit soon, is that Samhain is our new year, so i am starting to take a look at things that i need to sort out! The main thing i am changing or improving is my health. A part of being Wicca is to respect yourself something i had never cared much for, if i am honest. So i have started to take more time to eat right, exercise and meditate. To be honest i have never felt better! I will never go back to my old ways (other than a bit of chocolate now and then! I am a female after all.) So for Samhain i encourage you to try and do a little of the same, if you don't already that is

Samhain, Samhain, Samhain.

For those who do not know about Samhain, or those looking to learn more! Also for those who just cant get enough!(like me)

so right down to it!

Samhain lore
Samhain is the third and final harvest, the harvest of meat. The Old King is dead, and the Crone Goddess mourns him greatly during the next six weeks. The sun is at its lowest point on the horizon as measured by the ancient standing stones of Britain and Ireland, the reason the Celts chose this sabbat rather than Yule as their new year. To the ancient Celts, this holiday divided the year into two seasons, Winter and Summer. Samhain is the day on which the Celtic New Year and winter begin together, so it is a time for both beginnings and endings.

It is also the day we honor our dead. Now, while the veil between the worlds is thinnest, those who have died in the past year and those who are to be reincarnated pass through. The doors of the sidhe-mounds are open, and neither human nor faery need any magickal passwords to come and go. Our ancestors, the blessed dead, are more accessible, more approachable during the time of the dying of the land. Samhain is a day to commune with the dead and a celebration of the eternal cycle of reincarnation.

Altar for samhain
Altar candles should be orange (represents magick of fire and remainder of fire in autumn leaves), black (collects and absorbs light and keeps you warm), white (sends out energy), silver, and gold (represents Moon and Sun).
Incense may be myrrh or patchouli
Decorate with autumn flowers, small pumpkins, Indian corn, and gourds
Cauldron with black votive candle for petition magick (for writing resolutions on a strip of paper and burning in the candle flame)
Divination or scrying devises -- tarot, obsidian ball, pendulum, runes, oghams, Ouija boards, black cauldron or bowl filled with black ink or water, or magick mirror, to name a few
An animal horn, feather or talon as a power symbol (Samhain is traditionally the meat harvest)

Herbs
Rosemary (for remembrance of our ancestors), Mullein seeds (a projection for abundance), mugwort (to aid in divination), rue, calendula, sunflower petals and seeds, pumpkin seeds, turnip seeds, apple leaf, sage, mushrooms, wild ginseng, wormwood, tarragon, bay leaf, almond, hazelnut, passionflower, pine needles, nettle, garlic, hemlock cones, mandrake root
At Samhain, witches once gave one another acorns as gifts. During the Burning Times, giving someone an acorn was a secret means of telling that person you were a witch. Acorns are fruits of the oak, one of the most sacred trees to the ancient Celts. They are symbols of protection, fertility, growth, values, and friendship.

Spells
At Samhain, witches cast spells to keep anything negative from the past -- evil, harm, corruption, greed -- out of the future. Cast spells to psychically contact our deceased forebears and retrieve ancient knowledge, thus preserving the great Web that stretches through many generations of human families. -- Laurie Cabot, Celebrate the Earth

Things to do on Samhain
one of my fave traditions is, the silent supper, or mute meal, however you prefer to look at it. This is where i like to go all out. Making loads of Samhain themed foods, (you can find some recipes on my craft corner page) Inviting all my pagan friends round. Decorating the table & surrounding areas, all having a drink and a chat before sitting down. Where we then dine in silence to welcome and honor the dead, once everyone had finished then you can go on to some dancing and singing, or play some games, like apple bobbing. It really is a great Sabbat if you have children or friends, also for solitary witch as well as those in a coven theres lots more to do like:

  • Make a witches ladder for protection or as an expression of what you hope to manifest in the year ahead.
  • Make a besom, or witches broom.
  • Drink apple cider spiced with cinnamon to honor the dead. Bury an apple or pomegranate in the garden as food for spirits passing by on their way to being reborn.

Everyday is magick

Everyday no matter what conflicts i might have faced, i am always thankful for the life i have, and the people who surround me. I am blessed that my odd words now and then, might help comfort some of you. I know having a religion, which is not even recognized as a religion in england is hard, always having to explain what it is. That it is a religion, seeming as paganism means all non Abrahamic religions . We are blessed, to have a faith that we found/ found us. That we did not cry for comfort from the nearest religion. That we found beliefs that suited us and our views. I will work, and i will try my hardest, to help my faith be better understood, i will not try to make people believe what i do, but i will try to explain it to the best of my ability. Not everyday but somedays, i am faced with negativity due to the fact i am proud of my faith, that i do not hide it away, in all honesty i rather that people disagreed with me than if i was embarrassed or ashamed of what i believed in. So everyday i wake up proud to be what i am, it makes everyday magick. Now take your thoughts/worries climb a hill sit think and listen to the world around you. Find your inner peace and be proud of who you are. Blessed be all i hope everyone is well. have a good day.

When people associate pagan's with satan...

so true
*here is a topic that really grates on me, so sorry if i start to seem irritate at any point.*

It's surprising how still so many people do this, the above picture cannot be more right. Wicca is not a devil worshiping religion because within it there is no devil. Also side note being a harry potter fan does not make you wiccan :)
some people try to argue that the Horned god is Satan or what-have you, but its not, the reason they may think this, is due to the fact our religion, paganism was here before that of Christianity and many others. Most countries were pagan, different types yes, but predominantly pagan. When Christianity came about they took a lot of aspects from wicca and pagans our holidays and days for example:

Winter solstice/yule      - Christmas, Jesus birthday is no where near the date of yule According to the best information I can find, Jesus was born on the 14th of May in 6 BC.
Spring equinox/ Ostara -Easter

Samhain                          -Halloween
Imbolc                             -Valentin s day

Beltane                           -May day

Tyr's day                        -Tuesday

Woden's (Odin) day       -Wednesday

Thor's day                      -Thursday

Freya's day                    -Friday

Saturn's day                   -Saturday
Sun's day                        -Sunday

Moon's day                    -Monday

Right glad thats covered. Please do not be offend by any of this, reality is paganism was here first, Christianity came later the reason they put all there holidays by pagan ones was so that everyone would feel more at ease converting religion so to speak. Thats why i believe images of Satan changed from that of serpent like (as originally depicted) to that of horned and red, to once again convert and give the image of negativity to wicca.
I was in Tintagel a while back, a must by the way, i was at the witchcraft museum when i took a picture of this sign they had there. So true. People like to think, and stereotype without actually knowing much of that religion or person. Most people don't like what they don't understand, or don't know about. Aslong as we know better, and instead of retaliating or yelling at that person take it upon our selfs to educate them, we are doing the best we can to fight the fear, and spread the truth of what it is to be pagan :) blessed be everyone. thanks for reading. I hope this gives you either a better knowledge of wicca or the inspiration to help others understand it.

Help me to fight the fear :)

Talking to parents about wicca

Is a scary thing, if you are like me, and discovered your path reasonably young. I first approached my mum about it around the age of 15, she was always open and excepting of other religions, so i thought it would go well. Sadly she didn't understand it, i think she assumed it was bad, like most who don't have much knowledge of wicca they only assume, and go by the little they hear which is usually false information. So given this she basically said no. I chose to keep to wicca as i knew it was for me and not what she thought it was, i just chose not to tell her about it. until i was a little older 18. But between the time of my first telling her to the second time round, i eased her into it, talking about different religions altogether, telling her bits about paganism here and there, having certain symbols on jewelry and other items. My boyfriend being pagan also, he follows a different path to myself but he always helped in joining in the conversations, and the second time round its like she was fine, she accepted me straight away basically because she knew more about it, and understood and agreed with most of the views. It was the best feeling knowing she accepted me and my beliefs.
So its always a tricky subject to give advice on, because it depends on the parents the relationship between them and you. My advice is if your young ease them into it because when your younger you tend to change a lot. so i think in my mums eyes i was to young to make such a big decision, obviously for those older, it might be easier just to talk to them one on one explain what it stands for that its not evil, theres no Satan involved, because we don't believe in Satan to us it doesn't exist, theres no hell, but it always comes down to the situation, say if your parents are strictly one religion, it depends i suppose on their views on other religions as a whole, and you have to try and determine whats right for that situation.  I hope all of you trying to being accepted, are and i hope you are welcomed with open arms for all that you are. Blessed be.
A little chant to help :)

Give us strength and courage,
Knowledge and fulfillment;
Assist us as we attempt to achieve our goals.
Watch over us, our loved ones, and all of our
Brothers and Sisters,
We are joined together for
Fellowship and celebration.
Bless us all as we light our flames,
And the eternal fires in our hearts.
Guide us and protect us,
So Mote it Be

Book Of Shadows (BOS)

This bit is for those just starting a pathway, or those wanting to start there own book of shadows after maybe having shared ones within a coven. Just some basic info and advice :)

The Book of Shadows is a book that contains a witch's rituals, spells, runes, dreams, recipes, etc. Within covens, the original Book is copied by hand by the initiates. A solitary may also keep a Book, recording within spells, etc. The Book is normally a secret book.

What is found with in the Book is often spells and such copied from other sources and, of course, those that are uniquely your own. The Book is a record of a witch's magickal work. What is wonderful about it is that every Book of Shadows should be a little different. Maybe you've found clove oil works best for a prosperity spell while the original spell called for patchouli oil. Because of the multitude of personality and available resources, not every Book of Shadows should be the same and therefore not only ONE Book is the right Book.

To make a Book of Shadows, any blank book will do. Most are hard bound, but that's not mandatory. I prefer a non-ruled book because of my penchant for drawing as i write, but this is completely optional. The color of the book is optional, but black does seem to be traditional, mine is brown with golden emboss. Today, in this wonderful world of computers and the Internet, many witches are keeping their Books on their computers. Just keep in mind that if you keep your Book on computer to back up the data! you do not want to lose years of practice, when i was starting my path my friend was doing it at the same time, we felt more comfortable sharing a book of shadows together, but now we are more comfortable in our craft we have are own, and copies of our shared one. Each path is different, cannot stress that enough. When i started my own book i blessed it first, i will put up a bos blessing in the spells page. The first page in mine is the wiccan rede. for me it seemed a good place to start. Enjoy your journey and blessed be. )o(

The Pentacle

Pentagram

knowing what it means

Elements of pentacle

Of all the symbols and tools used in Wicca and witchcraft, this is probably the most misunderstood. The pentacle is usually a flat piece of metal or wood inscribed with a pentagram, a five-pointed star.

The pentacle came from ceremonial magic and has been used in ritual and magick for thousands of years. It is used to represent feminine energy and to consecrate objects such as amulets and charms. The pentacle is also a traditional symbol of protection and is one of the official symbols of a Wicca.

The pentacle is the tool of the North and is associated with Earth.

The pentacle is feminine in nature and represents the Goddess.

The pentacle, as used by Wiccans, has the a single point of the star pointing up, which is not to be confused with the Satanic version which is inverted (two points up).

Chakra and Auras

Well lets start with what's a Chakra?
Well it's the bodies natural energy zones. Thats where our body makes and stores our electrical energies that make us function. These zones have been studied for years in middle eastern philosophy and even now in western medicine. it's the basis of Acupuncture and Acupressure as well as Reflexology.
Not to mention it's cornerstone tool for helping that energy, Riki.
These energies control all the major aspects of our physical and mental Health. They attune to our emotions as well as our physical health.

Auras are an outward manifestation of these electrical energies. It has even been documented with Kirilian Photography. His breakthrough proved to the scientific world that these energies did exist, could be measured and studied.
Some people can actually see or feel or even taste them. Many feel them, ever walk past a person whom you've never met and all of a sudden your skin crawled or you wanted to flee, or you just felt their feelings or thoughts. well that may be you feeling their aura

The Wiccan Rede

(normal long version)

Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust.
Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.

For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out.
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme.

Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much.
Honor the Old Ones in deed and name,
